The interpreter works in a soundproof booth with at least one colleague. The interpreter listens to the speaker through headphones and translates almost simultaneously, speaking into a microphone. Members of the audience have receivers that allow them to select a channel relaying their preferred language.
Simultaneous interpretation is appropriate for well-attended conferences held in locations where booths and a suitable sound system already exist or can be set up.
