According to the World Economic Forum, technical skills alone are not enough for success in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. They must be integrated with a series of soft skills, otherwise professionals and companies risk failing to keep up with the socio-economic changes currently affecting the world.
These skills include:
- emotional intelligence,
- an ability to work with others,
- people management,
- negotiation skills.
In other words. knowing how to interact with others: a challenge that becomes even more complex in a global economic context with people from different cultures meeting and collaborating every day. While these abilities may be to some extent innate, they can always be improved and strengthened.
There are two possible approaches to this task:
- Improving Interpersonal Effectiveness, i.e. the ability to interact with others and gain their support, respect and trust. This is the purpose of the Social Styles model.
- Developing Cultural Awareness, i.e. an understanding of cultural differences and their impact on communication (in fact we speak of Intercultural Communication) and on the so-called international Business Etiquette.
